ISLAMIC, Mongols. Great Khans. Möngke, AH 649-658 / AD 1251-1260. Dirham (Silver, 23 mm, 2.36 g, 9 h), Tiflis (in Georgia), Dhu'l Qa'dah AH 658 = October AD 1260. In a dotted square, ‘lā ilāha illā / Allāh waḥdahū / lā sharīka [lahū]’ (‘There is no deity but Allah, the One, there is no partner to Him’ in Arabic); double-trident tamgha of Möngke in the center; date formula in the margin, of which only the month of ‘Dhū al-Qaʿdah’ (in Arabic) is legible. Rev. In a dotted square, ‘Mūnakkā qā/ʾān al-aʿẓam / al-ʿādil’ (‘Möngke, the Supreme Khan, the Just’ in Arabic); a star to the top right corner; mint formula in the margin, of which ‘al-dirham – bi Tiflīs’ (‘dirham in Tbilisi’ in Arabic) is legible. Album 1977. Bennett, Möngke, 102. Nicely toned. Struck slightly off center and with minor deposits, otherwise, very fine.
